We’ve all been there. You book a pet-friendly cottage, imagine yourself strolling around the yard with a glass of Shiraz in hand, and arrive to find the fence is three-strands of wire that your Frenchie could pop through in her sleep. Instead of relaxing, you spend the weekend on high alert.

To save you the stress, we’ve curated 5 Mudgee stays that give you the inside scoop on which property is right for you and your fur baby.

1. Douro Cottage, Central Mudgee

The Vibe: A delightful mix of heritage charm and modern convenience, just two blocks from the CBD. The Fence Report: This is a rare find. Douro Cottage features secure and private front and back gardens. It’s perfect for those who want to be in the heart of town but need a fortress for their furry friend.

2. Evanslea Luxury Boutique Accommodation

The Vibe: Five-star luxury set within 4.5 acres of manicured, riverside gardens. The Fence Report: While the whole property is an oasis, it’s a dream for your doggo with good recall as they have plenty of room to romp and roll. If your dog isn’t quite as….responsive…we recommend a longline leash so they can still enjoy the lush surroundings. There are multiple accomodation options to choose from, so select your luxe and get ready for a special stay.

3. The Cudgee at Mudgee

The Vibe: Newly renovated and central—perfect for a quick weekend getaway. The Fence Report: Highly rated for its cleanliness and its secure, enclosed yard, this hotel has easy walking access to the Putta Bucca Wetlands Loop (dogs on leash only) and close enough to the Jenny Blackman fenced off-leash dog park for your fur baby to make some new local friends.

4. Merala: Cosy Cottage with Easy Stroll to CBD

The Vibe: Warm and inviting heritage cottage with a modern interior. The Fence Report: Merala is praised for its enclosed read garden space, making it a stress-free choice for medium-sized dogs who like to sniff around while you relax. It’s an easy stroll to the CBD for more exploring.

5. Trelawney Farm, Bombira

The Vibe: A massive, 130-year-old colonial farmhouse that sleeps up to 12. The Fence Report: Even on a rural block, the immediate house yard is securely fenced, providing a safe bubble for your dog amidst the wider vineyard views. We still recommend keeping your dog on a long leash if their recall isn’t solid, but if you’ve ever wondered how you and the family might enjoy lounging by a wood fire in the country with your dog snoozing quietly – this is the stay for you.

Important: The Mudgee Fur-Parent Code

While these yards are dog friendly, Mudgee is home to plenty of kangaroos and livestock. To keep these properties pet-friendly for years to come:

  1. Always Scoop: Use the bins provided. If you need extra bags, they can be found in bins around town.
  2. Inside at Night: Some rural stays require dogs to sleep inside to protect local wildlife. Kangaroos will frequent front yards, even in town – so beware of keeping your pupper and the locals safe.
  3. Barking: Be mindful of the valley’s silence; a barking dog travels a long way in the quiet country air!
