Explore Mudgee Your Way: Top Spots for Mobility & Sensory Needs

Travel should be about the view, the taste, the smells, and the company – not about worrying if you can get to the experience at all. While Mudgee still has a long way to go to cater to all access needs, it’s come a long way and there are superb experiences waiting for you.

We’ve curated these 5 experiences to ensure they offer something special for everyone.

1. Mudgee Farmers’ Market (Robertson Park)

The Experience: Held on the 3rd Saturday of every month, this is a must-do Mudgee weekend experience. It’s a sensory delight to start your weekend as the smell of fresh bagels and coffee greets you.

Accessibility Win: Robertson Park is located in the center of town and is mostly flat with wide, paved pathways encircling the market stalls. Beware, sometimes in hot weather, the market is held on the grassy lawn under the trees – instead of on the hard packed gravel section – which can be hard going for some mobility vehicles.

  • Pro-Tip for Easy Access: Parking directly on Market Street can be chaotic. For much easier footpath and stall access, try parking on Lovejoy Street (the side street near the playground). The curb ramps here are well-maintained and lead directly into the heart of the market (including quick access to toilets on the way)

2. Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp (Wollemi National Park)

The Experience: Don’t let the name fool you -this is a stunning, serene waterway surrounded by ancient pagoda rock formations. It’s incredibly peaceful and perfect for birdwatching.

Accessibility Win: The National Parks team has done a brilliant job here. There are step-free outdoor pathways and a hard-packed gravel track that leads to accessible picnic tables right by the water’s edge.

  • Sensory Highlight: This is a fantastic spot for those with vision impairment; the acoustic stillness of the water, the smell of eucalyptus, and the unique textures of the sandstone rocks offer a deeply tactile connection to the bush, and if you enjoy the water, the silky, cool river is a delight to swim in. There are canoes for rental too if you’re needing a more athletic pursuit.

3. Mudgee Arts Precinct

The Experience: A world-class gallery that serves as a quiet, air-conditioned sanctuary. It hosts high-end exhibitions in a beautifully light-filled space.

Accessibility Win: This is the gold standard for modern accessibility in Mudgee. It features automated doors, an elevator to the upper level, and spacious, high-spec accessible restrooms. The onsite, Empower Cafe operates as an Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE) under Mid-Western Regional Council, providing meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

  • The Value Angle: Entry is free, and the wide-open layout makes it stress-free for those using larger mobility scooters.

4. The Mudgee Sculpture Walk (Lawson Park)

The Experience: A gentle, 1.5km paved pathway along the Cudgegong River featuring a rotating collection of large-scale sculptures.

Accessibility Win: The bitumen path is wide, flat, and specifically designed for wheelchairs and prams. There are benches scattered along the way for respite and access to the river.

  • Tactile Tip: Many of the sculptures are bronze or stone and are located right next to the path, offering a wonderful tactile experience for visitors who want to feel the art.

5. Mudgee Honey Haven

The Experience: A local icon where you can taste dozens of honey varieties and watch live bees in a secure glass display.

Accessibility Win: The facility is designed for large groups, meaning the floor plan is wide, level, and very easy to navigate.

  • Accessibility Detail: The honey-tasting station and the gelato counter are at a lower height, making them easily accessible for visitors in wheelchairs.

Experience Mudgee Accessibility Tip:

If you need a key for the wheelchair-accessible swing in Robertson Park (near the Farmers Market), you can register for one at the Mudgee Visitor Information Centre on Market Street – opposite the park.
